"Aulnay is located in the canton Matha, arrondissement Saint-Jean d’Angély, in the present-day French département of Charente-Maritime, about 10 kilometres north-east of Saint-Jean d’Angély. The families of the vicomtes in the area of Aulnay within the county of Poitou can be reconstructed into two separate groups. The family in which the name "Mainard" was predominant and the family of the "Cadelon" vicomtes. The relationship, if any, between the two family groups has not been established. Members of the "Cadelon" family are recorded as vicomtes from [921] until the early 13th century when the family became extinct in the male line and the title Vicomte d'Aulnay passed to the family of the Seigneurs de Taillebourg. The "Mainard" vicomtes were more short-lived, mentioned first in 914 and for the last time in [990]. As noted in Part A below, it is likely that the family became extinct with the death of Vicomte Gombaud in [990]. ... The relationship between the first two vicomtes named Cadelon has not been confirmed, although it is likely that they were father and son. Europäische Stammtafeln
[11] shows a third Cadelon in the series between the individuals who are shown below as Cadelon [I] and Cadelon [II]. However, from a chronological point of view it is more likely that there were only two different vicomtes Cadelon mentioned between [921] and [967]. The same source also shows yet another Cadelon between the ones shown below as Cadelon [III] and Cadelon [IV]. However, assigning broad estimated birth date ranges to each individual in this family shows that there is probably insufficient time for another generation, although it is recognised that this is an inevitably inaccurate process. The name "Cadelon" suggests a connection with "Chadalhoh[Kadelonis", the name of several counts in Carinthia and Bavaria between the 9th and 11th centuries."

Vicomte Guillaume reached agreement with the prior of Chemillé, with the consent of “uxoris meæ E. vicecomitissæ, de cujus patrimonio erat terra de Camiliaco”, by charter dated to [1190/1204][111]. m as her first husband, EUSTACHIE d'Argenton Dame de Chemillé, daughter of PIERRE d'Argenton & his wife Sibylle de Mortagne (-after 1244). Vicomte Guillaume reached agreement with the prior of Chemillé, with the consent of “uxoris meæ E. vicecomitissæ, de cujus patrimonio erat terra de Camiliaco”, by charter dated to [1190/1204][112]. The primary source which confirms her parentage more precisely has not yet been identified. She married secondly ([1203]) as his second wife, Guy de Thouars Duke of Brittany. The primary source which confirms her second marriage has not been identified. She married thirdly Renaud de Maulévrier (-after 1244). ii) JEANNE ([before 1190?]-[1235], bur [Tusson])
. She is named in Europäische Stanntafeln as the wife of Geoffroy [V][113]. Her birth date is suggested based on her brother, who had already succeeded their father, being married when he died in [1201/03] and on the assumption that the two siblings were of a similar age. The primary source which confirms her parentage has not yet been identified, although her name is confirmed and her family origin indicated by a charter dated 1235 under which her husband “comme mari de l’héritière des vicomtes d’Aulnay” notified that “Jeanne sa femme vicomtesse d’Aulnay” had donated revenue from tolls and sales at Aulnay to Tusson[114]. From this extract, it is difficult to tell whether Jeanne was living or deceased at the time. The need for the notification is more obvious if she was deceased. "The origin in France of the Aulnay/Alneto family, several members of which arrived in southern Italy in the 1260s with Charles d’Anjou King of Sicily, has not been traced. Della Marra, in his mid-17th century review of the family, provides no suggestion about their French origin[889]. The family has not been connected either to the Aulnay family in Champagne (see the document CHAMPAGNE NOBILITY-CENTRAL CHAMPAGNE (MARNE)), the vicomtes d’Aulnay in Poitou (see POITOU-WESTERN), or to the Seigneurs d’Aulnay[-sous-Bois] near Paris (PARIS REGION NOBILITY-CLERMONT & DAMMARTIN). It should be noted that several other places named Aulnay have been identified in France so, without further indications, speculating on the precise origin of the Italian family seems fruitless. The 1252 charter quoted below indicates that one family member was present in Provence before the Italian expedition, but he could have arrived from elsewhere when Charles Comte d’Anjou [Capet] first acquired an interest in Provence on his marriage in 1246. Desvoyes records the arms of this Italian Aulnay family as “coupé de gueules et d’or, au lion naissant d’or sur gueules”[890], which has not yet been linked to any Aulnay family in France. It is not clear that all the persons named below were descended from a common ancestor. "

"The lordship of Aumâle was located in the north-east of the duchy of Normandy, south of the county of Eu, centred on the town of Aumâle on the river Bresle. It passed to the family of the Comtes de Ponthieu following the marriage of Berthe, heiress of Aumâle, to Hugues de Ponthieu. Their son Enguerrand was Seigneur d'Aumâle as well as Comte de Montreuil. On his death in 1053, his widow Adelais, illegitimate daughter of Robert II Duke of Normandy, styled herself as countess, but applied the title to the territory of Aumâle rather than Montreuil, apparently without any formal regrant. Adelais brought the new “county” to her third husband Eudes Comte de Troyes, who was disinherited of his paternal inheritance and sought refuge in Normandy where he and his descendants were accepted as counts of Aumâle as vassals of the dukes. The king of France captured the castle of Aumâle in 1196, and awarded the title to Renaud de Dammartin Comte de Boulogne in Dec 1204. "

"The most obscure of the counties in Gascony, the county of Aure was separated from the county of Astarac in the early 11th century. The members of this family are recorded in the 10th century with the title "vicomte". The first mention of "Arnaldus comes de Aura" is dated to 1039. The circumstances in which his territory was elevated to comital status are unknown. Jaurgain suggests that he was descended through the female line from the comtes d’Astarac, and that the county passed to him through this route, but as will be seen below the primary sources do not conclusively confirm that this hypothesis is correct. The county survived only a few decades as such. In 1082, Centule [IV] Gaston Vicomte de Béarn and Comte de Bigorre obliged Odon [I] Comte d’Aure to accept the suzerainty of Bigorre. The family reverted to the title "vicomte" and died out in the male line in the late 12th century, when the title passed by the marriage to the family of the comtes de Comminges. The name survives in the two communes of Vielle-Aure and Fréchet-Aure which are located in the present-day French département of Hautes-Pyrénées. "
