"Beaujeu, in the area known as Beaujolais, is located about 20 kilometres south-west of Mâcon and the same distance north-west of Villefranche-sur-Saône, in the present-day French département of Rhône, arrondissement Villefranche-sur-Saône, canton Belleville. In medieval times, the area developed semi-autonomously but was linked to the counties of Forez and Lyon to the south and to the duchy of Burgundy to the north. It is possible that the Seigneurs de Beaujeu were related to the comtes de Lyon et de Forez. Samuel Guichenon, in his Histoire de la Souverainté de Dombes written in 1662, cites earlier secondary sources which suggest that they descend from "Umfred, fils d'un comte de Lyon et de Forest, son frère, inhumés en l'église de Saint-Irénée de Lyon". This is based on an epitaph (disappeared by the date of Guichenon's work) which records the death in "the year 99" of "Artaudus comes Lugdunensis et comes Forensis et dominus Bellijoci et Umfredus frater eius et mater eorum"[593]. Guichenon cites another version of the epitaph, from "une ancienne généalogie manuscrite" which he found in the archives of the "chapitre de Saint-Jean de Lyon"[594], which reads "Artaudus comes Lugdunensis ac Forensis, dominus Bellijoci, anno 999" and "Artaldus filius et mater eius". The editor of the 1874 edition of Guichenon records yet another version, from "la chronique trouvée à Belleville" which reads "…Artaldus comes Lugd. et Forensis dns Stephanus comes frater eius et Amphredus Bellijoci dns et pater et frater eorum, obiit dictus Artaldus 993". Guichenon's conclusion is that none of these versions is likely to be genuine, based on his supposition that pre-1000 epitaphs are infrequent and that the authentic ones which do survive record only names and titles not the territories ruled. He adds that the chronology is such that, if the Beaujeu family did descend from the comtes de Lyon, "Berardus" cited below could have been the brother of Gerard Comte de Lyon, and son of Comte Artaud [I] who lived in 900[595]. Auguste Bernard states that the seigneurs de Beaujeu descended from "Bernard ou Béraud ou Gérard", who he says was the youngest of the three sons of Guillaume [I] Comte de Lyon to whom his father granted "la sirerie de Beaujolais", but he cites no primary source on which he bases his statement[596]. From an onomastic point of view, neither of the names typical of the family of the Comtes de Lyon (Artaud and Gérard) is found in the family of the Seigneurs de Beaujeu, although this is not of course conclusive proof that the relationship did not exist.

The exact relationship between the above family sub-group and Bérard husband of Wandelmode is not known, but the common use of the names Guichard, Bérard and Lambert suggests that the two families were closely related. Maybe they were related through Bérard's mother. "

"The following person is shown separately because of doubts about her parentage[418]. Her family origin is confirmed by the 22 Jun 1305 marriage contract cited below. It is clear that Agnes was heiress of Beaumont which she brought to her husband on their marriage. There appear to be five possibilities for her father:
(1) Raoul [VII], by an unrecorded late marriage. The date of Agnes’s marriage suggests her birth around the end of Raoul [VII]’s life, considering that noble ladies often married aged around 14 at that time. Agnes was therefore unlikely to have shared the same mother as Richard [II] Vicomte de Beaumont (marriage dated to Apr 1221) or to have been the daughter of Raoul’s known wife Agnes (named in 1212). The absence of any reference to another marriage of Raoul [VII] suggests that this is the least likely possibility, although such a marriage is not impossible if Raoul's younger sons had died childless and if Richard [II] had no surviving children. If this marriage occurred, the absence of any later reference to the wife as guardian of her daughter suggests that she died soon after the birth of any child.
(2) Raoul [VII]’s son Raoul. Information about the younger Raoul is sparse. He was old enough to make donations in his own name in 1218 appears to have been alive in 1237 (see above). It is reasonable to assume that he married, despite secondary sources asserting that he died young, and that he could have had children.
(3) Raoul [VII]’s son Guillaume. It is chronologically possible that Agnes was Guillaume’s daughter, assuming that Guillaume was married and had children before he died (which seems likely). In addition, assuming that Guillaume was the son of Raoul [VII]’s wife Agnes, the younger Agnes would have been named after her paternal grandmother.
(4) another son of Raoul [VII], unrecorded in any surviving primary source, a possibility which presumably cannot be excluded.
(5) the descendant of one of Raoul [VII]’s brothers, assuming that all Raoul’s children died without surviving issue.
It is unlikely that Agnes was the daughter (or granddaughter?) of Richard [II] and his wife as there is no evidence that the couple’s descendants claimed succession to Amboise (of which Richard’s wife was heiress), although it is presumably possible that a family agreement was reached (the document no longer surviving) to compensate Agnes for renouncing her succession rights. It is also unlikely that Agnes was descended from the Beaumont family in the female line as she was named “Agnès de Beaumont” in the 22 Jun 1305 document cited above.
Two other factors may be significant, although neither swings the balance in favour of any particular possibility. Firstly, after the death of Richard [II] no reference has been found to any person holding the title vicomte de Beaumont before Louis de Brienne, which appears consistent with the absence of any surviving male heir with a claim superior to Agnes’s. Secondly, no reference has been found to any of Agnes’s maternal relatives playing any part in her guardianship or in the administration of Beaumont before her marriage, which is unexpected if any were alive at the time.
