MALET Lucy (I15683) [Femme]

"Keats-Rohan records that the Malet family was established at Graville-Sainte-Honorine, now a suburb of Le Havre in the present-day French département of Seine-Inférieure, in the Pays de Caux in Normandy by the beginning of the 11th century and also held land near Caen[953]. The family’s importance in the area is gauged by their construction of a castle there in the early decades of the 11th century, one of only a small group built in the Pays de Caux before 1066[954]. The family holdings which are recorded in Domesday Book show that the participation of Guillaume Malet in the invasion of England was rewarded with extensive land in the north of Suffolk, which eventually formed the honour of Eye which passed to his son Robert [I] ...
The following family group was related to the Malet family but the precise family relationships have not been established. The questions surrounding the ancestry of Lucy Ctss of Chester were discussed in detail by Katherine Keats-Rohan who, as noted below, suggests that Lucy was the daughter of Thorold de Bukenhale (see below) and his wife, who she suggests was a daughter of Guillaume [I] Malet (see above)[1012]. The difficulties appear to centre on the interpretation of Latin relationship terms (avunculus, nepos, cognatus, antecessores etc.) as used in the documents quoted below. While many of these terms have precise meanings in theory, numerous examples can be found of their being used to denote a range of family connections[1013], making it difficult to draw definite conclusions about cases such as Lucy’s. The following section shows possible family connections in square brackets to emphasise the uncertainty. It certainly does not provide the final answer."
