"The family of the second dynasty of vicomtes de Narbonne was already established in the town during the reign of Charles II “le Chauve” King of the West Franks, as shown by the charter dated 10 Sep 852 which is quoted below. It is not known how they acquired the vicomté (probably in the early 920s), in particular whether this was by inheritance from or marriage into the first dynasty of vicomtes which are shown in Part B. above.[The origins of the family of the first known Vicomtes de Narbonne are unknown. This family provides one of the few proven examples of teritorial migration among the nobility, a younger son of Mayeul [I] Vicomte de Narbonne emigrating to Burgundy where he was installed as Comte de Mâcon. ] "

"The county of Cerdanya was located in the interior of Catalonia, east of the county of Urgell and north-west of the county of Besalú. The county of Berga [Berguedà] was situated south of Cerdanya. The county of Cerdanya was conquered in the 830s by Seniofredo, father of Guifré [I] "el Pilós/el Velloso/the Hairy" who was installed as comte de Barcelona in 878 (see Chapter 2.A). Guifré [I] was confirmed as comte de Cerdanya i Urgell in 870 by Charles II “le Chauve” King of the West Franks. Cerdanya passed to Guifré´s son Miro [II], who also held the counties of Conflent and Berga. The county passed to Ramon Berenguer [III] Comte de Barcelona in 1117."

"
The vicomté of Carlat was located in the area known as “le pays de Carladez” in the south of the county of Auvergne adjoining the county of Rouergue, in the present-day French département of Cantal. The castle of Carlat was built about 16 kilometres south-east of Aurillac in an impregnable position, dominating the lines of communication between Auvergne and Rouergue, around which a medieval town of some importance developed. A charter dated to [940] refers to Carlat as a county: “Bernardus” and others, acting as executors of “Garnerii...quondam”, donated property “in villa...Illa Vernia...in comitatu et vicaria Cartelacensi” to Brioude abbey[736]. No reference has been found to any counts at Carlat at any period and it is possible that this isolated example represents a misdescription of the status of Carlat. A document dated 930, quoted below, refers to a donation of property "in pago Arvernio in ministerio Cartladense", clarifying that Carlat was at that time a subdivision of the county (pagus) of Auvergne. A similarly imprecise description of the political status is found in the charter dated to 913, also quoted below, under which "Bernardus…et uxor mea…Magalendis" donated property "in patria Arvernica, in aice Carlacensi in villa…illa Scura" to Saint-Julien de Brioude[737]. No reference to a named vicomte de Carlat has been found before the early 11th century, although the names Girbert and Bernard used in the early generations of the family, shown below, suggest that the ancestors of the first vicomte already enjoyed some authority in the area from the early 10th century. The vicomté of Carlat passed to the vicomtes de Millau by marriage in the mid-11th century. "

"The Swabian "Staufen" family were representative of a new type of nobility which emerged in Germany in the second half of the 11th century. They were unconnected either with the original German tribes, such as the Saxons or Bavarians, or with the artificial political creation of Lotharingia. The family owed its rise to power to strategically placed castles, in particular the castle of Stauf on the Staufenberg near Göppingen, from which the family took its name. The Staufer broadened their influence by building further castles and eventually centred their activities around the town of Waiblingen in Swabia, from which their Italian supporters eventually adopting the name "Ghibellines".
