"Until about 930, power in Castile was shared by five different families, the relationship between whom, if any, cannot be traced with certainty.  There was no true central authority, and it is probably more accurate to describe these different counts as "in Castile" rather than "of Castile" at that time.  This shared authority is illustrated by the Cronica de Sampiro which names "Nunius Fredenandi, Abolmondar Albus et suus filius Didacus, et Fredenandi Ansuri filius" (see below, Chapter 1, parts D, A and C, respectively) as those counts who governed "Burgos" and who were captured by King Ordoño II "in riuo…Carrion, loco…Tebulare", datable to [922/23] from the context of the passage[10].  In 930, Gonzalo Fernández, known as "de Lara" from the castle which he built, succeeded his father after nine years in exile.  From that date until 1029, the county prospered, especially under the rule of the strong count Fernando González, son of Gonzalo Fernández.  The succession became hereditary in the same family, and the counts established full political autonomy from the neighbouring kingdoms of León and Navarre.  They also strengthened the county's frontiers against Muslim incursions, although in the later 10th and early 11th centuries the ruling counts benefited from strategic alliances with certain Muslim rulers. "

de RIBAGORZA Dadildis (I12721) [Femme]
Change: 14 MAY 2025

#Générale#HTML

"The county of Ribagorza was part of the territory which later evolved into the kingdom of Aragon, situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees approximately between the rivers Esera (to the west) and Noguesa Ribagorza (to the east).  Its main town was Benabarre.  It was bound on the east by the county of Pallars, and on the west by the district of Sobrarbe.  Charters from the early 9th century record donations to Alaon made by counts named Bego and Berenger, who were also counts in the county of Toulouse (see the document TOULOUSE, KINGS, DUKES & COUNTS)[274].  In 833/34, a count named Galindo was recorded in the territory[275].  He has not otherwise been identified, but his name suggests a connection with the contemporary counts of Aragon (see the document ARAGON KINGS).  From the late 9th century until [1018], the county of Ribagorza was ruled by the family of counts who are set out below in Part A.  In [1018], Ribargorza´s independent existence ceased when it was occupied by Sancho III "el Mayor" King of Navarre.  When King Sancho divided his territories between his sons when he died in 1035, Ribargorza was joined with Sobrarbe to form the fleeting kingdom which was granted to his son Gonzalo.  Ramiro I King of Aragon defeated his half-brother Gonzalo in 1045 and annexed his territories to the kingdom of Aragon.  The condes de Ribagorza have been studied by Serrano (in 1912)[276] and Valls Taberner (in 1915)[277]

The origin of the family of the counts of Ribagorza is not known.  The 11th century “Crónico de Domènec”, from the archives of Roda, indicates that the counts ruled “jussu Caroli regis magni”, presumably indicating simply that they were vassals of the Carolingian West Frankish kings/emperors rather than that they held the county at the time of Charlemagne, but more significantly adds “de cujus progenie esse ferebatur[278].  No further details of this possible Carolingian ancestry have been found.  The names of counts Raimundo [I] and Bernardo [I] suggest a connection with the family of the comtes de Toulouse, which was recorded between 848 and 871 as ruling the neighbouring county of Pallars (see the introduction to Chapter 2 of the present document).  Other names used in the family, including Miron, Isarn (a variant of Aznar), and Lope suggest a local connection with counts in neighbouring Aragon and Catalonia. "

de PAMPELUNE Jimeno (I12722) [Homme]
Change: 13 MAY 2025

#Générale#HTML

"His name is indicated only by the patronymic accorded to his sons in the Codex de Roda.  No direct information has been found relating to Jimeno.  However, the Chronicon Fontanellensis records that ambassadors from "Induonis et Mitionis Ducum Naverrorum" attended Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks "in Vermeria Palatio" with gifts and agreed peace, dated to 851[31].  A footnote in the edition consulted notes that Marca, in his Historiæ Bearniæ, corrects the apparent reference to two individuals in this edition to "Inniconis Eminonis Duc. Navarr"[32].  Jaurgain records that Oïhenart suggests that the names should in fact be "Iniconis et Ximinonis", adding that they should be identified with "Eneco-Garcia et Semen-Garcia, neveux du souverain de Pamplone"[33].  This hypothesis is not acceptable from a chronological point of view.  It is more likely that, if the passage intends to refer to two individuals, they were Íñigo Iñíguez and Jimeno, father of García Jiménez.  The Libro de Regla of Leire Monastery, compiled in 1076, records that "filius eius Eximinus Enecones" succeeded "rex Enneco Garseanes", adding that his wife was "Munia" and that he died "era DCCLXXV"[34].  This source is confused and contradicted by numerous other primary sources in many of the details which it records.  It is not certain that it can be assumed that this passage refers to the father of Íñigo Jiménez.  m ---.  The name of Jimeno's wife is not known.  The Libro de Regla of Leire Monastery, compiled in 1076, records that "filius eius Eximinus Enecones" succeeded "rex Enneco Garseanes", adding that his wife was "Munia" and that he died "era DCCLXXV"[35].  This source is confused and contradicted by numerous other primary sources in many of the details which it records.  It is not certain that it can be assumed that this passage refers to the father of Íñigo Jiménez.  It has been decided not to include "Munia" as the wife of "Jimeno", considering the number of uncertainties in the text."
