"The disparate development of Saxony as a territory, contrasting with the more centralised evolution which is characteristic of the other ancient German provinces in particular Bavaria, is discussed in the introduction to the document SAXONY, DUKES & ELECTORS. Early sources reveal the names of numerous counts in Saxony between the 9th and 11th centuries, details of whom are set out in this chapter. The sparse amount of information in contemporary primary sources on the family relationships of this early nobility is striking, rendering reliable family reconstruction virtually impossible. It also means that the process by which titles and territories in Saxony were transmitted between generations is unclear. It is reasonable to suppose that, just as in later centuries, the nobility was a close-knit community and that their successors in the 11th century onwards were descendants of their 9th and 10th century counterparts. However, only two examples have so far been found of proven family connections between these early individuals and later noble families in Saxony, the Grafen von Querfurt (see the document SAXONY NOBILITY) and the Markgrafen von Meissen (see MEISSEN). The three most prominent Saxon families in the 8th to 10th centuries, those of Widukind, Liudolf and Hermann Billung, are not mentioned in this chapter but are dealt with fully in the document SAXONY, DUKES & ELECTORS"

Four children, brothers and sister:
Considerable controversy surrounds the paternity of these children. Graf Konrad son of Gebhard (died 982) and Graf Udo son of Gebhard (died 949) have both been proposed as their father, Jackman being the principal proponent of the former theory while Hlavitschka has written extensively in support of the latter. It is unnecessary to repeat the detailed arguments in support of each case, as they are fully set out elsewhere, and particularly because each has appeal and neither is obviously preferable. From a purely chronological point of view, the estimated birth date range of the daughter Judith does suggest more difficulty in sustaining the argument in favour of Graf Konrad being their father. The introduction of the name Heribert into the family suggests a strong family connection between these four siblings and the Vermandois family. As shown above, it is suspected that the wives of Gebhard (died 949) and Udo son of Gebhard (also died 949) were daughters of Héribert I Comte de Vermandois. However, in neither case is it obvious that the four siblings shown below were descended from these sisters. In the case of Gebhard, it appears difficult to identify his known son Konrad with Konrad who succeeded as duke of Swabia in 983, and (as noted above) it is chronologically hard to sustain that the siblings were the children of Gebhard's known son Konrad. In the case of Udo son of Gebhard, his known son Udo was recorded as bishop of Strasbourg so could not be the same person as Udo, one of the four siblings shown below, who was killed in 982. All these reservations suggest that there may be a completely different explanation for the parentage of these four siblings from the two theories of Jackman and Hlavitschka. "

"No source has yet been identified which names the parents of the following five brothers. The fact that one is named Matfried suggests a close family relationship with Adalhard [IV] and his wife, assuming that she was the daughter of Matfried [II]. A descent from Adalhard [IV] is also suggested by the common use of the names Stefan and Gerhard in the two families. While the various sources quoted below establish that all five were brothers, no source has been found which indicates that they all shared the same mother (see the discussion about the possible distinction between the terms “fratres” and “germani” under Walacho, below)."

"[Three] siblings, parents not known. The poem by Gosbert, addressed to the brother "Guillelmum Blesensium comitem", which refers to him as "Francigenum primo proavis abavisque peralto"[122] suggests that their ancestry was illustrious. Levillain identifies Eudes with Odo, son of [Adrianus [Udalrichinger] & his wife Waldrada ---][123]. This seems unlikely to be correct as the name Guillaume/Wilhelm (brother of Eudes Comte d’Orléans) does not appear at all in the Udalrichinger family, although it is possible that the name could have been introduced from their mother’s family. A possible clue about the origins of Eudes's mother is provided by the Vita Hludowici Imperatoris which records the blinding of "Heribertus Bernhardi frater" and his exile with "Hodo consobrinus illius"[124]. The previous passage in the Vita records the confiscation of Orléans from Eudes Comte d'Orléans. It is possible that he was the same person as "Hodo", although if this is correct the precise nature of the relationship between him and Héribert has not been established. Assuming that Héribert was the son of Guillaume de Toulouse and his first wife Cunigundis (about which there is some doubt, as explained elsewhere in this document), and assuming also that "consobrinus" is used in the text in its strict sense, Cunegundis and the mother of Eudes Comte d'Orléans would have been sisters.
