"According to Heimskringla of Snorre Sturleson[8], the early kings of Sweden were as follows. There is little reason to be confident about the order and dating of these kings. If their names are correct, it would appear to extend the known history of the Swedish kings back to the early 9th century. In addition to those listed below, the Catalogus Regum Sveciæ records an undated list of “pagan” kings, the first of whom was “Rex Inge, quem primum Sweciæ monarchiam rexisse”, his son “Neroch”, and many generations of their supposed descendants, until “Olauer Skotkonung…primus rex Sweciæ Christianæ”[9]. It has not proved possible to reconcile this (presumably legendary) information with the information shown below in the early part of the present chapter.

Adam of Bremen names "Ring cum filiis Herich et Edmund" as kings "apud Sueones", specifying that "Anund, Bern, Olaph" were among his predecessors[17].
