"[Four] siblings, parents not known. There is some speculation that their father was Richard (died after 796), named in the
Vita Hludowici Imperatoris as royal missus in 796 "Willebertus…Rotomagæ postea urbis archiepiscopum et Richardum comitem villarum suarum provisorem"[635]. Gingins-la-Sarra states that “on présume” that the brothers Richard (died (-[839/12 Nov 842]) and Buvinus (father of Boson King [of Provence]) were sons of this Comte Richard[636]. He relies on Nithard who records that his own father Angilbert "was a descendant of a family not unknown in those days, Madhelgaud, Richard and he came from the same stock" (“Angilbertus...Madhelgaudus autem, Richardus [apparently referring to Richard brother of Buvinus] et hic una progenie fuere”)[637]. Settipani makes the link to another source: Richer states that “Karolus Constantinus, Viennæ civitatis princeps” (son of Emperor Louis III, son of King Boson) was “ex regio quidem genere natus” but “concubinali stemmate usque ad tritavum”[638]. He fits “Richard fils présumé du comte Hieronymus”, whom he identifies as Richard who is named in 796, into this line of descent, suggesting that the chronology supports the “tritavus” in question being Comte Hieronymus[639]. Whatever the truth about the imprecise descent referred to by Richer, inserting Comte Richard (named in 796) into this line requires a giant leap of faith. There is no proof either that Hieronymus had a son named Richard or that Richard (named in 796) had any connection at all with the brothers Richard and Buvinus (other than his name). The speculation may be interesting, but it does not appear well argued. Until more information comes to light, it is suggested that it should be treated with extreme caution. "

"The following family seems to have displaced the preceding family as Comtes de Dijon, some time before 912 presumably after the death of Comte d’Adémar without surviving children (see above). Dijon may have been returned to the family of the earlier counts after Giselbert succeeded as duke of Burgundy in 936. "

"The county of Nyon ("Neodunum") in Vaud was otherwise known as "pagus Equestricus". The charter quoted below suggests that it may have included the town of Geneva in the early 10th century. Gingins-la-Sarra suggests that the county of Geneva was divided, after the death of Comte Manassès [I] at the end of the 9th century, into the county of Geneva proper (comitatus Genenensis) and the county of Equestria (comté des Equestres, comitatus Equestricus) which lay on the northern bank of the river Rhône and included the territory of the later seigneurs de Gex[264]. He suggests that the new county lay south of the river Aubonne, west of lake Geneva and the county of Vaud, and east of the second chain of the Jura mountains, the county of Seoding in the diocese of Besançon, and the canton of Nantua (comitatus Varesinus, based on the château de Varey) in the diocese of Lyon, and corresponded with the ecclesiastical deaconate of Outre-Rhône (decanatus Ultra Rhodani), later called the deaconate of Aubonne or Gex"
